The Roman bridge of Alcantara was built in 103 AD and was declared a National Monument in 1924. It currently supports heavy vehicle traffic that circulates on the EX-117 that is deteriorating it considerably; for this reason, the Junta de Extremadura decides to project a new bridge over the Tagus, allowing this legacy to be preserved for generations to come. The construction of a bridge parallel to the Roman bridge of Alcantara is a strong challenge for engineers who feel the design of bridges as something vocational. This article shows the design constraints and the finally projected structure.
