摘要
This research is a critical assessment of the dimensions and impacts of a study away course to Puerto Rico, where students were immersed in Afro-Puerto Rican history, culture, and experiences. The course facilitated space for students to learn about the experiences of the diaspora from the perspectives of the diaspora, connect with Afro-Puerto Rican community organizations, and conduct research around a complex question or problem centering Afro-Puerto Rico. The study away course discussed in this paper demonstrates one method to expose undergraduate students to travel, high-impact learning experiences, and Black Studies research. Sharing such pedagogies is vital to strengthen teaching practices and advance the discipline. This work seeks to contribute to ongoing conversations about the role of Black Studies in higher education and underscores the course's necessity, particularly in states like Florida, where such classes face increasing political challenges. By sharing the significance of these educational experiences, this research emphasizes the important role high-impact practices can play in enriching students' academic journeys and advocating for the continued relevance of Black Studies.
