Intimate Partner Violence Against Chinese Men: A Qualitative Study

This study investigated the experiences of Chinese men subjected to intimate partner violence (IPV), addressing a gap in research that predominantly focuses on female victims. We conducted qualitative thematic analysis on posts from 54 heterosexual men on public forums, focusing on power and control dynamics, to explore their experiences of IPV. Findings revealed not only common IPV forms like physical violence, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, and economic exploitation but also categorized "infidelity" as a distinct type and identified a uniquely Chinese cultural issue, mother-in-law/daughter-in-law conflicts. This study can provide guidance for professionals, IPV service providers, and policymakers to ensure that appropriate attitudes and measures are adopted when dealing with IPV across different genders.
