THE HERITAGE OF WATER AND SANITATION: CULTURAL LANDSCAPE AND INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE IN MORRO GRANDE

Starting in the 19th century, the village of Cotia became a water supply source for S & atilde;o Paulo through studies conducted by engineer Theodoro Sampaio, then director of the Water and Sewage Department (R.A.E.), later known as DAE, on the use of the Morro Grande water sources. Within this context, the Nossa Senhora das Gra & ccedil;as Dam, the Pedro Beicht Reservoir, and the DAE Workers' Village were constructed, serving as a typical example of Industrial Heritage connected to water supply and sanitation issues for the cities of Cotia and S & atilde;o Paulo. Our aim is to approach Industrial Heritage as an integral element of the Cultural Landscape, as we believe that the Morro Grande Forest Reserve and the DAE Workers' Village are interconnected, not separate environments. This article is part of doctoral research presenting an analysis of the historicity of environmental heritage concepts and the cultural landscape category, as well as their use by international and national preservation bodies. Additionally, it examines the concepts underlying the listing process of the Morro Grande Forest Reserve and the exclusion of its DAE Workers' Village.
