THE GLASS CAVE: LEADERSHIP IN EXTREME CONTEXTS

This teaching case is based on the documentary The Cave by director Feras Fayyad. The documentary takes place in an underground hospital on the outskirts of Damascus between the year 2017 and the spring of 2018. This hospital is connected to the outside environment through tunnels and shelters, which is why it is nicknamed: "The Cave". The protagonist of the documentary, Amani Ballour, is a pediatrician and managing director of a hospital built in a place under constant threat of chemical attacks, where supplies are scarce, where she faces daily skepticism from men while caring for her patients. Based on this case, the aim is to promote understanding and learning, leading the student to live an experience in an extreme organizational context in which he will have to analyze the possible configurations of leadership. The case can be applied in disciplines related to People Management, such as Human Resources, Leadership, Organizational Behavior, which address the themes of leadership, culture, organizational context and related themes, both at undergraduate and graduate level.
