Whilst the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries mainly looked upon Emilie du Chatelet (1706-1749) as a translator and popularizer of Newton's theories and as Voltaire's partner, more recent research has seen in her a scientist and philosopher. After an overview of the reception of her personality and writings, we shall focus on the greater openness of Italian academies, compared to European ones, towards women, confirmed by the nomination of the French scholar as a member of Bologna's Accademia delle Scienze.
