AMERICA HAS THE IMAGE OF A WOMAN: SOME EXAMPLES FROM THE 16TH TO THE 19TH CENTURY

The encounter of America for Europe will be the event that will change its history in a definitive way. The impact of that historical fact and the news that reached the West, fueled the desire to know the new territory and thus complete the quadripartite vision of the world. These ideas will be reflected through images initially related to barbarism and even cannibalism and, later, in idealized and allegorical forms. Thus was born the image of America, inspired by classical models, as a woman accompanied by a series of attributes that show concepts and stereotypes of the American scenario according to the times, countries and fashions.
