The Place and Cartography in "The Hobbit": A Geographical Reflection for Teaching

The contemporaneity presents challenges for education due to the advancement of communication media and the proliferation of entertainment that captures the attention of young people. In this context, the possibility of implementing supplementary teaching materials can aid in this "competition" for students' attention, as these resources, for the most part, are entertainment-oriented. Thus, the assimilation of these materials represents the incorporation of entertainment as a teaching tool, rather than renouncing it. That said, this study analyzed the possibilities that J.R.R. Tolkien's book The Hobbit offers as a supplementaryteaching materialforthegeographical concept of place and for cartography, exploring how these themes can be seen and discussed through the work. The study highlights the potential offantasy literaryworks like The Hobbitforteaching, enabling parallels to be drawn with the thoughts of Geography and cartography scholars regarding the analyzed elements.
