To the Editor: Manrique-Acevedo et al. (April 4 issue)(1) conclude that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of substantial illness and death in patients with type 1 diabetes. They state that predominantly observational data remain the basis for treatment decisions, but they do not address the effect of salt intake as an important lifestyle measure for the mitigation of cardiovascular risk. High salt intake plays a considerable role in the development of hypertension in persons with type 1 diabetes.
