Practical experience in the determination of the residual capacity of a UNIVAC 1100/81 computer system is reported. The ″capacity″ is expressed in service oriented terms. There are several questions which are answered: 1) Which workloads and how much of them can be executed in parallel to a given basic workload for which a set of performance indices with limits, which must be guaranteed, is specified? 2) How are the values of these performance indices of the basic workload influenced by a reduced availability of resources? It is then possible to express equivalences between different forms of the capacity. The methods used in this study involve measurement and modeling using simple relations from operational analysis.
