Study on the strength behavior of Al2O3·SiO2/ZL109 metal-matrix composite

Short fiber or particulate reinforced Metal-Matrix Composites (MMC) are a class of advanced materials. These composites have extensive potential for use in aerospace and automotive industries due to their lower densities and superior mechanical properties. It is imperative therefore to study the strength behavior of such MMC. In this paper, we describe the results of quasi-static tensile and compression test, or of plate impact experiments conduced on a Al2O3·SiO2 short fiber reinforced ZL109 cast aluminum alloy. The tensile strength, compressive yield strength, dynamic yield and spall strength are presented. Discussion of the mechanical characterization of the Composite is given.
