ION IMPLANTATION IN MILD STEEL FOR CORROSION RESISTANCE.

Investigations were carried out on the effects of ion implantation on the corrosion resistance of mild steel. Three different kinds of ions - phosphorus, arsenic, and antimony - were implanted in a number of mild steel specimens. Tests, conducted in a borate-chloride solution, showed phosphorus was much more beneficial than either arsenic or antimony. The most effective implantation dosage produced a peak concentration of phosphorus of about 30 atomic per cent at a depth of about 600 angstroms beneath the surface. This composition increased the range of passivity of mild steel in borate-chloride solution by 900 mv.
