The influence of carburizing temperature, quenching temperature and cooling medium on the case depth and hardness for a 0. 1%C carbon steel treated with nitriding and carburizing was studied. The comparison was done with a single heat treatment. The results showed that compound heat treatment with nitriding and carburizing is an effective surface hardening process for low carbon steel.
