Large scale integrated circuits have been subject to important mutations in the last decade. The constant decrease of prices which can be noted during this period is due to the strong competition between LSI manufacturers who have had to improve performances, complexity, and integration density of their devices. On the other hand, new application fields have been discovered creating considerable needs and the indispensable conditions for production cost reduction. This fast evolution makes the choice of technology rather difficult, a situation which seems to remain the general trend through the coming decade.
