Comparison of the results of ac and dc etching shows that ac etching accelerates the solution of metal in acid solution and enhances phase contrast by formation of colored passivating films in neutral and alkaline solutions. The mechanism of the effects is investigated, and a close relation between pH of the etchant and ac potential is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally.
