Effect of precipitation hardening by vanadium and titanium on the corrosion resistance of HSLA steel bars

The influence of titanium and vanadium on the grain refinement and precipitation hardening of HSLA steels is surveyed. The corrosion behaviour of HSLA steels increases rapidly for Ti-containing GSLA steel when dipped in calcium hydroxide solution containing chloride or sulphate ions. Vanadium containing HSLA steel shows good passivity in solutions having up to 0.4% sodium sulphate in calcium hydroxide and shows breakdown of passivity in the hydroxide solution containing 0.03% and 0.04% sodium chloride.
