The long-term performance of materials and elements involved in the near and far-field of an underground nuclear waste repository was studied. The performance of the native copper as an analogue for copper canisters, interactions between copper corrosion products and uranium and the interactions between uranium and smectite were discussed. It was observed that the processes of sorption, precipitation and incorporation of radionuclides in fracture coating materials effects the long term retention of radionuclides.
