Study is made of the effect that an external magnetic field at right angles to the current has on the spatial distribution of electron-hole pairs and on the current-voltage characteristics of a crystal in which the plasma is strongly degenerate. Allowance is made for not only the external magnetic field, but also the current's magnetic field and the resulting pinch effect. It is shown that in magnetic fields for which the magnetoresistance of a homogeneous plasma is negligible a plasma that is compressed by the magnetic field may have a high magnetoresistance. This is due to a change in the total number of carriers or their local mobility.
