Oxidation of aromatic and aliphatic disulfides with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst and sodium molybdate or tungstenate was studied. The reaction was found to yield the corresponding thiol sulfonates or disulfones depending on the phase transfer catalyst used (triethylbenzylammonium bromide or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, respectively). This distinction is determined by the solubility of the intermediate peroxo complex formed by the interaction between H2O2 and a metal compound in the organic phase. The reaction can be used for utilization of the products of oil demercaptanation.
