Neutral atom contribution in the strong-field harmonic generation

This paper reports experimental results which strongly suggest that the harmonics with hvq p are predominantly produced by the nonlinear response of neutral atoms even in the tunneling regime. It does a systematic measurement of the Ε-dependent harmonic yield for Ne, Ar, and Kr. The experimental apparatus and procedure are almost the same as those in previous study using a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser (30 mJ/150 fsec) and a pulsed gas jet. The femtosecond laser pulse is focused with a thin 25-cm focal length CaF2 lens at an intensity more than approx.1015 W/cm2, and the harmonic is detected with an electron multiplier mounted on a 20-cm focal-length vacuum ultraviolet monochromator.
