A range of ceramics based on homogeneous solid solutions of lead zirconate-lead titanate (PLZT) have been developed and these have different nonlinear properties depending upon their composition. One such ceramic PLZT type 9. 0 - 65/35 exhibits the quadratic electro-optic effect and this has been utilized to produce an integrated linear array of ten electro-optic modulators on a single slice of material. This device was developed for use as a page composer in a digital recording system. With driving voltages of around 200 V on/off ratios greater than 100:1 and response times as short as 100 ns have been obtained.
