Is lightning a threat to PE pipe?

Using an experimental approach, an attempt was made to determine the type of damage that can be created in PE gas pipe by subjecting pipe samples to high voltage discharges. The primary purpose of the experiments was to obtain parametric data as the distance between the tracer wire and the pipe varied. The tests were conducted at the Ohio State University High Voltage Laboratory. In general, results show that tracer wire placement has little, if any effect on the chance of lightning strikes causing damage to buried PE pipelines and that it is very difficult to damage PE pipe using high-voltage pulses to simulate lightning strikes.
