Preconditioning of chips by mechanical pressing prior to refining is an efficient way of improving the relationship between energy consumption and pulp quality. Results of pilot trials clearly demonstrate that static compression of wood chips perpendicular to the grain can reduce energy consumption in the refiner while improving pulp quality. However, practical application of this technique on an industrial scale remains a formidable engineering challenge.
