Nestled in the rural community of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the high technology manufacturing facility of Collins Defense Communications, Rockwell International Corp. , that integrates the computer in the manufacturing, testing, and inspecting of the AN/ARC-182 radio for military aircraft. Underneath the robotics and computer-aided equipment on the factory floor is a 'hidden factory', a data system that links all the facility's output, performance, and quality control. A network of 28 IBM PCs tracks production on the factory floor. This Distributed Manufacturing Control System (DIMACS) measures the performance of each assembly line and each operator.
