Surface-driven twisted state in Gd/Fe multilayers were studied by tuning incidence angle of hard x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (MCD). Experimental evidence revealing the surface nucleation of a twisted magnetization state in a ferrimagnetic multilayer was presented. It was shown that the surface nucleation occurred at T≅0.7 compensation temperature (Tcomp), and the twist propagated throughout the bulk at T∼Tcomp. The results revealed the ability of grazing incidence MCD in fluorescence geometry.
