Determinations have been made of the combustion behavior of fine pulverized fuel chars burning at 1200 to 2200 degree K. The rates of combustion, burning temperatures, and the development of pore structure, have been measured for various char particles. The temperature measurements show that carbon is removed from the particles as CO, rather than CO//2. The relationship between the burning rate and temperature, and the ratio of the actual to the maximum rate, shows that burning rates are mainly controlled by physico-chemical processes within the particles' pore structure.
