The commenters give some remarks on the roles of dissipation and dispersion in determining the efficiency of second harmonic generation which they feel should have been given by K. S. Champlin et al, (1986). In reply, Champlin et al, appreciate the comments and point out that their treatment was intended as a simple treatment and stand by their original conclusions.
