In order to develop both hardness and fatigue strength of a retractor spring for a car seat belt made of AISI-301 stainless steel sheet to high levels, the effect of final cold rolling conditions, especially rolling temperature, has been studied. One of the results obtained shows that a remarkable improvement in both hardness and fatigue strength, as well as bending formability, can be obtained by using a new double-stage cold rolling process. Details of the new process are given.
