Transmission electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis study of the NiZr-H system

Precipitation of the hydride phases B and γ in NiZr was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The habit plane for precipitates of the B phase in α and the orientation relationship between α and B was derived. Metastable plates of γ are observable in the α-matrix after electrolytic charging. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves reflected the effects of phase transitions in the hydrides, oxidation and outgassing from the hydrides. Using the DTA phase transition temperatures and information from other work, a phase diagram for the NiZr-H system is proposed for the first time.
