To reduce the number of degrees of freedom of a network of multi-component, reversible reactions, a method is proposed in which the reactor and the separator are regarded as a whole, so that an N-component, reversible reacting system can be treated as a binary system. The new method enables the rate of reaction of a process to be measured experimentally without difficulty. A simple expression for the rate of reaction is derived for first-order, lumped- and distributed-parameter systems.
