The work-hardening behavior of polycrystalline alpha zirconium was investigated in the temperature range 77-442 K. More than one stage of work-hardening was observed at all temperatures of test and as such, the assumption that the flow curve could be characterized by a single parabolic equation is not valid for zirconium. Further, work-hardening in zirconium is found to decrease with increase in temperature. Electron microscopic observations have revealed a linear dependence of dislocation density with true plastic strain. While the first stage of hardening was observed to be due to dislocation multiplication in coplanar arrays, the second stage is associated with cross-slip taking place as revealed by cell formation at temperatures and strains.
