A new field of application for power engineering lies in the electrical protection of bathing beaches against sharks, at luxury tourist resorts. This article reviews traditional methods of protection from shark attack, then discusses the reaction of fish and sharks to pulsed electric fields. An experimental system has been installed at a bathing resort, with promising results.
