This paper discusses the United States energy crisis and the need for conversion of coal to clean liquid and gaseous fuels, gives projections of energy demand, and notes the fossil fuel reserves to meet this demand. The authors discuss a possible time table for synthetic fuels production, the required coal reserves, and capital investment. They review processes for liquid and gas production and show the similarities and differences of the various conversion systems.
