RELATION BETWEEN ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND SEA LEVEL IN THE NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC OCEAN.

A joint analysis is performed on two-month level and atmospheric-pressure series for five points on the Pacific side of Kurile Ridge. Common energy maxima are detected at frequencies of 0. 08, 0. 3, and 0. 65 cycle/day. It is shown that an ″inverse″ law holds well for all points except one, where the amplitude characteristic is much larger than unity. The joint analysis of sea level and atmospheric pressure indicated that low-frequency disturbances propagate along the Kurile Ridge in a northeastward direction with a characteristic velocity of 50 km/hr. The wave numbers were calculated from the phase shifts in the reduced level and agree well with the first mode of the continental shelf waves.
