摘要：
River crossings are a vulnerable link in cross-country pipeline construction. The author describes how directionally controlled, horizontal drilling has been used recently to install a large-diameter crude-oil pipeline in a stream crossing. This method affords maximum protection to the pipeline and surrounding environment, with minimum interference with surface traffic.
