Bainitic transformation in austempered ductile iron with reference to untransformed austenite volume phenomenon

Specimens prepared from a 1 wt pct Mn ductile iron were austempered at 375 °C and 950 °C for 90 min, and were austempered at 375 °C and 315 °C for 10,000 min. Volume fraction measurements of untransformed austenite volume (UAV) were made using an image analyzer. To calculate the minimum UAV value, two probable bainitic transformation theories were assumed: incomplete reaction phenomenon and diffusion-controlled transformation. The good agreement between experiments and calculated values shows the following: incomplete reaction phenomenon is the most probable mechanism of bainitic transformation in austempered ductile iron; and with the aid of the procedure, the minimum UAV value can be predicted.
