Over the past several years, significant advances have been made in both microwave and millimeter-wave receivers for communications systems. The advent of satellite communications, bringing real-time communications to all parts of the world, has made the development of affordable low-noise systems for the expanding communications frequency bands a prime objective. The parametric amplifier and FET amplifier have been at the forefront of these low-noise systems. This paper explores the present state of the art for low noise systems at C band left bracket 3. 7 to 4. 2 GHz right bracket , X band left bracket 7. 25 to 7. 75 GHz right bracket , Ku band left bracket 11. 7 to 12. 2 GHz right bracket and the new communication band around 20 GHz. Future trends are projected for each band.
