Plastisols or PVC pastes take up a special position compared with solid, normally granular, thermoplastic molding compounds in that they are liquid in consistency. The classic techniques for processing thermoplastic molding compounds are injection molding, extrusion and compression molding of plastics melts. Here, plastisols fill a gap in that they can be dipped and spread coated, a field where they have so far been the only contenders, having only recently been joined by a competitor, likewise liquid and solvent-free but much more complex and difficult to process, namely multi-component polycondensate systems. The present article is concerned with the importance of plastisols for numerous industrial and craft applications, as well as new developments in the field. The first part of the paper deals with raw materials and auxiliaries, their production and characteristics. For figures see German text.
