The high price of tantalum used as an additive in steel cutting grade hardmetals has evoked interest to substitute tantalum for other refractory metals in hardmetals. The Zr-Nb-Ti-W- and Zr-Hf-Ti-W-carbides as mixed carbide phases were found to be useful for this purpose. Results show that Zr-Nb-Ti-W- and Zr-HF-Ti-W-carbides can successfully substitute Ta-Nb-Ti-W cubic phase in steel cutting grades of hardmetals. The properties of experimental alloys are compared to those of conventional hardmetal grades. While hardness and wear resistance is increased, toughness as measured by the TRS (transverse rupture strength) test was found to decrease.
