One of the demands placed on the South African Railways Administration is the transport over a wide area of large quantities of bulk materials - in particular, cement, slagment and lime - and, at present to a lesser extent, such commodities as sugar, maize, wheat and other grains. This paper deals with one particular aspect of the rail and road transport of dry bulk materials where pneumatic means are employed to discharge rail wagons and road tankers designed specifically for that purpose.
