Different types of alcohol, in particular methanol and ethanol, are considered as alternative fuels. Although a pure fuelling of the diesel engine with alcohol is possible, the use of a dual-fuel gasoil-alcohol mode is favored for commercial vehicle application. Of the investigated mixture-forming processes, the direct injection of alcohol, in connection with a gasoil ignition spray is presented as the most practical way of substituting a high proportion of gasoil with alcohol in the diesel engine. This article describes the fundamental investigations carried out on a one-cylinder commercial vehicle engine up to the first experiences with a dual-fuel gasoil-methanol operated bus.
