A water balance model was used to simulate an irrigation system, in order to compare three irrigation scheduling practices on the two soils for corn in central Illinois. For soil with a water-holding capacity of 0. 8 in. per ft, the practice of applying 30 percent of the available water when the soil water fell to the 70 percent level was the most profitable.
