Sociopolitical and economic unrest has characterized most countries in 1993 but each continues to compete in attracting foreign partners in hydrocarbon exploration and development. Egypt offers less restrictive hydrocarbon terms to entice companies back. Libya continues to deal with important European markets and Arab countries despite the UN-led sanctions. Operations in Angola continue to downplay renewed fighting in its long-standing civil war. Deepwater prospects continue to attract major companies here.
