Use of the proper filler metal permits the joining of Types 430 and 321 stainless steel to titanium, tantalum and other refractory base metals. Theoretical examinations were conducted to find a method to predict the mechanical behavior of dissimilar metal joints with filler metals. Cylindrically shaped specimens consisting of V and stainless steel (AISI type 321) diffusion welded with Cu filler metal were subjected to computer analysis using finite elements.
