Aspects of the mechanism for static electrization of weakly conducting liquids (liquid petroleum products, for example) in filling of large reservoirs are analyzed. A solution is obtained for the charge-transport equation in potential flow of a liquid within a tank; the relationships characterizing the charge distribution in the filled volume are established. Data obtained about charge distribution are used to calculate the steady electric field in a tank, allowance being made for the influence of surface charge on the free surface of the liquid. Maximum values are estimated for the parameters of the electric field in a tank that must be taken into account in development of means for protecting tanks against electrostatic fires and explosions.
