Stress relaxation around crack tip in ceramic composites

The objective of this study is to develop a method for estimating crack growth behavior of ceramic composite, Al2O3/SiCw. Detailed measurement of crack opening displacements and crack length during stable crack extension in granite and Al2O3/SiCw are measured by moire interferometry. Stress relaxation around crack tip is analyzed by a trial and error method. The estimation methods which can predict crack extension versus crack grow resistance and applied load versus crack extension are obtained using granite. Finally, the estimation method developed in this study is applied to Al2O3/SiCw. Good agreement between experimental data and analysis are observed.
