This paper describes the design and construction of a joint water and sewage pumping mains undercrossing of the tidal reaches of a main river. Two aspects of the scheme are of particular interest: - (i) The design was undertaken after thorough consideration of the practical difficulties of achieving the crossing; (ii) Significant economies were effected by undertaking the crossing jointly, In the area of Ford the Southern Water Authority is responsible for both water supply and sewage disposal. To improve the sewerage and sewage disposal of Arundel, it was decided to re-sewer the town and pump the sewage 6500m to the long sea outfall at Littlehampton. The sewerage arrangements necessitated a pumping main which had to cross the River Arun.
