This article reviews coal gasification combined-cycle technology and gives the results of a survey of 23 coal gasification projects comparing them with 8 European projects. Using a ratio of 1000 tons of coal per day to produce 100 MW of power, the calculated generation capacity of 21 American commercial projects is approximately 9500 MW. If all proposed projects were built, about 7. 4% of the new capacity in 1990 would be from integrated coal gasification combined-cycle power generation units.
