This paper presents a summary of available performance data for several types of passive and hybrid solar heating systems using heat pipes or thermosiphons to transfer collected solar energy from the absorber to short or medium-term thermal storage located within the building being heated. This location of the thermal storage compared to storage in direct view of the sun is shown to greatly reduce heat losses from storage and to permit solar collection even under unfavorable sun conditions.
