Angular-momentum spatial distribution symmetry breaking in Rb by an external magnetic field

In the presence of an external magnetic field, excited-state angular-momentum alignment-orientation conversion for atoms was investigated. At intermediate magnetic-field strength, the phenomenon occurred under Paschen Back conditions. Using laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, ground state hyperfine levels of the 5S1/2 states were resolved. It was found that circularly polarized fluorescence was emitted in the direction perpendicular to both to the direction of the magnetic field and direction of light polarization.
